Drug class
PPIs
Also called Proton pump inhibitors
Reduce stomach acid for heartburn, GERD, and ulcers.
How it works
PPIs shut down the 'pumps' in stomach-lining cells that release acid. With less acid in the stomach, irritation and ulcers can heal.
What it treats
GERD (chronic heartburn), peptic ulcers, H. pylori treatment (with antibiotics), erosive esophagitis.
Common side effects
Headache, abdominal pain, diarrhea, gas. Long-term use is linked to lower magnesium, B12 deficiency, and a small increase in fracture risk.
Worth knowing
Generally meant for short courses (2–8 weeks) unless a prescriber tells you otherwise.
