What it treats

Typical dosing

OTC: 20 mg once daily for up to 14 days. Rx doses vary by indication, typically 20–40 mg/day.

Side effects

Common: headache, stomach pain, gas, diarrhea. Long-term use: low magnesium, B12 deficiency, slightly increased fracture risk.

Interactions to know

Reduces effectiveness of clopidogrel (Plavix). Affects absorption of certain HIV and antifungal meds.
