Drug class
ACE inhibitors
Also called Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors
Lower blood pressure and protect the heart and kidneys.
How it works
ACE inhibitors block the enzyme that turns angiotensin I into angiotensin II — a hormone that constricts blood vessels. Less angiotensin II means more relaxed vessels and lower blood pressure.
What it treats
High blood pressure, heart failure, post–heart attack recovery, kidney protection in diabetes.
Common side effects
Dry persistent cough (10–15% of people), dizziness, mild headache. Rare but serious: swelling of face/lips/throat (angioedema), high potassium, kidney issues.
Worth knowing
Do not use during pregnancy. Avoid potassium supplements unless your prescriber says otherwise.
