What it treats

Typical dosing

Typical adult dose: 500 mg twice daily with meals, titrated up to 2000 mg/day max.

Side effects

Common: nausea, diarrhea, gas, metallic taste — usually improves in 1–2 weeks. Rare: lactic acidosis (severe).

Interactions to know

Tell your doctor before any imaging study with IV contrast. Alcohol increases lactic acidosis risk.
